Bearing Witness

January 14 to March 10, 2012

This exhibition launches a year of programming at the Kamloops Art Gallery that focuses on the re-reading of history, the provocation of power relations and the notion of “bearing witness” to world events through personal and collective narratives. Bearing Witness is the first in four exhibitions throughout 2012 that will be ideologically linked by these common threads.

Socially engaged works of art offer a powerful means of communicating the human experience. They bring attention to political violence, unjust social realities and man’s inhumanity to man. Drawn from the Vancouver Art Gallery’s permanent collection, this exhibition brings together the work of 27 artists who examine industrial exploitation, large-scale government action, the atrocities of war, the history of slavery, and the representation of women in society. The strategies and aims of these artists are as distinctive as the visual languages they employ. The photographers Margaret Bourke-White and Robert Capa, for example, saw their role as creating a record through the documentation of unfolding events. The painters Leon Golub and Nancy Spero responded to events with work that incited debate and galvanized communities. Others, such as Barbara Kruger and Magdalena Campos-Pons, are committed to exposing historical invisibility. Provocative and unsettling, the images in this exhibition bear witness to the powerful forces that shape our lives and world.

Bearing Witness is organized and circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery with the generous support of The Killy Foundation and Odlum Brown Limited

The Cube

The camera phone has created immediacy in photography in a way never seen before in the history of image making and image publishing. Photographers are now able to post their snap shots of events and moments to social media and photo sharing websites within seconds of image capture; subsequently rendering the printed hard copy photograph out-dated and unnecessary. Sarah Jules captures moments of intimacy that hint at greater narratives through her iPhone. She weaves a story from her experiences through these snapshots shown on video monitors and the printed image.

My Community Everyday

January 14 to March 5, 2012

BMO Open Gallery

This past fall, the Kamloops Art Gallery put out a photo call for students in grades 6 through 12 from the Region (Kamloops and TNRD). Participants were asked to capture their view or perspective of their community. In order to further the idea of documenting a spontaneous moment, the photo call specifically requested cell phone photography, a documenting tool that is increasingly used in social media and online communication. Selected photos will be on display in the BMO Open Gallery.

Crags and Crevices

Lynda Jones is the October Featured Artist at the Courthouse Gallery at 7 West Seymour Street. Well known for creating outstanding and decorative pottery, Lynda presents “Crags and Crevices”.

Inspired by the rough texture of medieval pottery, Lynda adds a band of texture after the pot is made using a black slip and a thin wash of glaze. This accentuates the irregular surface.

The Courthouse Gallery carries a wide variety of fine art and craft including paintings, glass art, textiles-fibre, tapestries, pottery, table art, sculpture, weaving, felting and jewellery all made by local artisans. The Gallery is open 10-5 Tues-Friday and 10-4 on Saturday. Free parking, handicap accessible and no HST.   Visit  www.kamloopscourthousegallery.ca

The Bones

September 17 to October 29, 2011

The Cube

The Cube is transformed into a projection room for Tara Gardner’s The Bones. Gardner explores her family history through a digitally recorded performance of herself playing a Celtic instrument called the bones. The instrument was one of the few creative endeavours passed on to the artist by her father who valued hard work and utilitarian skills over creativity and artistry. The movement required to play this instrument and the framing of the work draw the viewer in while the practice of playing the music serves as a reminder of the artist’s father and a way of dealing with grief after his passing in 2009. Gardner blends traditional with contemporary music playing along to country songs on the artist’s MP3 player.

On the Nature of Things

October 15 to December 31, 2011

To many Canadians the title of this exhibition will bring to mind David Suzuki’s longstanding science and nature television series of a similar name. However, in the context of this art exhibition the title is meant to summon up the words and images created by Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius in his epic poem De rerum natura. Its purpose was to explain Epicurean philosophy to Roman audiences in the 1st century BC.

In keeping with Lucretius’ clinamen principle, the exhibition On the Nature of Things is organized with a multi-directional and non-linear curatorial approach that highlights individual artistic practices through a close reading of specific works. Rather than choose one specific theme or medium to pursue, the exhibition introduces a number of subjects (or avenues) to explore. The artists in this exhibition share an interest in returning to strikingly Modernist forms and structures. Sampling from a wide range of sources as diverse as advertising, found photographs, driftwood and modernist art, these artists employ surrealist wit to repurpose clichéd forms from our everyday urban environment and popular culture into extra-ordinary aesthetic tropes that challenge a stable understanding of both art and our modernity.

The artists include Kim Kennedy Austin, Andrew Dadson, Sarah Dobai, Rodney Graham, Alexander Gutke, Sofia Hulten, Jack Jeffrey, Evan Lee, Kristi Malakoff, Shannon Oksanen, Kathy Slade, Gordon Smith, T&T (Tony Romano and Tyler Brett), Jacques de la Villeglé, and Neil Wedman.

‘(official denial) trade value in progress’

An ongoing dialogic project initiated by artist Leah Decter and curated by Jaimie Isaac

Presented in Kamloops in collaboration with Centre for innovation in Culture and the Arts in Canada (CiCAC)

In September of 2009, Stephen Harper delivered a speech to the G20 Summit in which he stated that ‘Canada also has no history of Colonialism’. ‘(official denial) trade value in progress’ appropriates the latter statement as a springboard for dialogue. A textile piece made up of a composite of Hudson Bay blankets reaching 12 feet high with this statement machine-sewn at the center, acts as the platform for response and dialogue.

‘(official denial) trade value in progress’ invites people to interact with Harper’s statement by writing their response to it in a book when the piece is presented in public, and through series of sewing actions where people choose a response that someone else has contributed, and hand sew it onto the blanket.

Schedule of Events:

Friday, October 7, 3:00 to 6:00 pm

Student Street, Old Main Building, Thompson Rivers University

Participatory sewing with Leah Decter and Jaime Issac

Saturday, October 8, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Curator’s Exhibition Tour

He teaches contemporary art and ideas that are informed by his freelance activities as an art critic and curator. He holds a PhD in Art History from the University of British Columbia. He is co-founder of Made Magazine (2002) and co-editor/author with Judith Steedman of the book Inside Magazines (published 2002 by BIS, Amsterdam / Thames and Hudson, London / Gingko Press, San Francisco). Since 1997 Andersson has curated, published artist books and produced editions for artists under the name Trapp Projects.

Warriors donate to lift the spirits of cancer patients

The Spirit Warriors dragon boat team in Kamloops consists of breast cancer survivors who get together and support each other and at the same time enjoy paddling and even racing.
Now in its fourth year, the team regularly participates in festivals and races survivors from other areas.
Earlier this year, the team hosted a comedy show, called the Boob Tour, which featured a line-up of comedians from Eastern Canada. While the show’s original intent was to raise money for upcoming festivals and to help with team expenses, community support was so great the team is now able to donate to Royal Inland Hospital to support others battling cancer.
The Spirit Warriors donated $2,000 to the Auxiliary’s hat, scarf and wig loan program based in the cancer clinic.
“The Auxiliary volunteers are always at the cancer clinic offering cookies, coffee, and support when I was in for treatments. It was always so nice to have them around and a treat always helped the medicine go down while going through the chemo. We are happy to support them,” said Spirit Warrior member Lisa Somogyi.
The Spirit Warriors welcomes other breast cancer survivors who wish to try dragon boating. Practice is Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Kamloops Pioneer Park boat launch from approximately 5:45 p.m. until just after 7 p.m. For more information visit http://www.spiritwarriors.ca/.
